Systems Architect

Primary Job Responsibilities:
eBay’s Systems Architecture team is responsible for the architecture of a distributed, highly scalable, adaptable and always available operating environment for eBay’s application. The team’s charter covers the following major areas:
• Grid computing, focusing on improving automation, monitoring and reporting, fault tolerance, and provisioning
• Services, focusing on asynchronous processing, messaging and service oriented architecture (SOA)
• Evaluation of new technologies, both hardware and software in partnership with site Operations and Research Labs
The Systems Architecture team is looking for someone with experience in one or more of these areas. The role involves close cooperation with Site Operations, Research Labs and Engineering. The successful candidate thrives in an entrepreneurial, fast-paced work environment, is process oriented and has good communication and presentation skills.
eBay’s world leading online auction system has a layered Java application architecture running on thousands of servers. This is a scalable unified system that supports very large transaction volumes and has a high degree of flexibility in running a globalized and unified code base that supports sites in many countries and languages.
Job Requirements:
A successful candidate would have a Masters or PHD degree in CS, EE or related field. 8+ years with PHD or 10+ years with MS degree. Experience with complex, large scale, highly available systems
Good communicator with ability to sell ideas
Experience in one or more of the following:
o Asynchronous processing and messaging
o Service Oriented Architecture
o Grid computing
o Experience or familiarity with site operations environment, including monitoring, provisioning and general 24x7 NOC based support model.
Experience with different Operating Systems and hardware platforms
Experience with Application architecture a plus
Proven results oriented person with a delivery focus
Process oriented and has ability to define new processes and optimize existing ones
Outstanding communication, presentation and written skills as well as an ability to deal effectively with both technologists and business representatives
Experience being part of a geographically distributed team a plus
Knowledge of Java programming language
